David Nalbandian of Argentina and Mario Ancic of Croatia have withdrawn from the U.S. Open. Top-ranked Dinara Safina has reached the semifinals of the Slovenia Open by beating beat Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 6-3, 6-0. Andrea Petkovic has rallied to beat Anna-Lena Groenefeld 6-7 (6), 6-3, 6-1 and reach her first career semifinal at the Nuernberger Gastein Ladies. The seventh-seeded Groenefeld hit 11 double faults on Friday. She won only six points on serve in the decider. Querrey among few seeds to win at Indy (AP)
Sam Querrey was one of the few seeded players who escaped the second round of the Indianapolis Tennis Championships with a victory. Querrey, seeded third, beat fellow American Rajeev Ram 7-5, 6-3 on Thursday. Ram beat Querrey in the finals of the ATP Hall of Fame Championship in Newport, R.I., on July 12 for his first ATP title.
